Micah 6: 1-8

God Challenges Israel

Hear what the Lord says:
Rise, plead your case before the mountains,
and let the hills hear your voice.

Hear, you mountains, the case of the Lord,
and you enduring foundations of the earth,
for the Lord has a case against his people,
and he will contend with Israel.

O my people, what have I done to you?
In what have I wearied you? Answer me!

For I brought you up from the land of Egypt
and redeemed you from the house of slavery,
and I sent before you Moses,
Aaron, and Miriam.

O my people, remember now what King Balak of Moab devised,
what Balaam son of Beor answered him,
and what happened from Shittim to Gilgal,
that you may know the saving acts of the Lord.

What God Requires

With what shall I come before the Lord
and bow myself before God on high?
Shall I come before him with burnt offerings,
with calves a year old?

Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams,
with ten thousands of rivers of oil?
Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression,
the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?

He has told you, O mortal, what is good,
and what does the Lord require of you
but to do justice and to love kindness
and to walk humbly with your God?

Be Just, Kind, and Humble

by Joey Capuano

This passage is so meaningful for all of us right now. I am amazed at how God speaks to us in the present through his word in scripture; even though it was written thousands of years ago.  Scripture is the living Word that always interweaves into our lives, teaching us. If we look at everything that is going on in the world right now, especially in our country and in many of our cities, we need so much more justice, kindness, and humility towards all people.

This is a calling that transcends all boundaries and differences - be they ethnic, racial, linguistic, Religious, and yes, political. How can we move forward? With justice. Our country is dedicated to the very important stance of "liberty and justice for all." God calls us to do the same as members of his family, where ALL people are "citizens."

How can we achieve justice for all? With kindness. Being kind is something that we learn the importance of from our guardians, and we continue to teach our children and youth of today the importance of kindness. But, if we are being honest, we fall short of this manner of treating others so often. We are all imperfect, but that doesn't mean that we can forgo kindness to get our way.

The final thing that God is calling us to do in this passage is to be humble. But, in a world, and especially in a Western society, where competition is key, as is always trying to gain the next promotion or higher status, being humble is sometimes seen as a weakness. However, what would happen if we all considered being humble the truest form of strength and success? How much better of a world we would have!

There is an old hymn that is set to the words of Micah 6: 1-8 that is really beautiful. The words show us what God requires and wants of us: "He has told you, O mortal, what is good, and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice and to love kindness and to walk humbly with your God?" Although it seems like 3 simple words, they are hard to live up to. The good thing is that we don't have to do it alone. The last words say that we have God with us as we are doing this: "and to walk humbly WITH your GOD!"

Even in the midst of such tragic events that are happening in our country and world, we have a God that will walk with us as we serve him and treat others in the way that he wants - with justice, kindness, and humility. We can work together at this! Only then will we begin to make things better, and to make our country and our world the place that we want it to be for ourselves, our family, our friends, our children, and all people. Let’s commit to this together.
