Lamentations: 1: 1-6, Luke 17: 5-10, and Psalm 91: 1-6, 14-16

Lamentations: 1: 1-6

1 How lonely sits the city
    that once was full of people!
How like a widow she has become,
    she that was great among the nations!
She that was a princess among the provinces
    has become subject to forced labor.

2 She weeps bitterly in the night,
    with tears on her cheeks;
among all her lovers,
    she has no one to comfort her;
all her friends have dealt treacherously with her;
    they have become her enemies.

3 Judah has gone into exile with suffering
    and hard servitude;
she lives now among the nations;
    she finds no resting place;
her pursuers have all overtaken her
    in the midst of her distress.

4 The roads to Zion mourn,
    for no one comes to the festivals;
all her gates are desolate;
    her priests groan;
her young girls grieve,
    and her lot is bitter.

5 Her foes have become the masters;
    her enemies prosper
because the Lord has made her suffer
    for the multitude of her transgressions;
her children have gone away,
    captives before the foe.

6 From daughter Zion has departed
    all her majesty.
Her princes have become like stags
    that find no pasture;
they fled without strength
    before the pursuer.

Luke 17: 5-10

5 The apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith!” 6 The Lord replied, “If you had faith the size of a mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you.

7 “Who among you would say to your slave who has just come in from plowing or tending sheep in the field, ‘Come here at once and take your place at the table’? 8 Would you not rather say to him, ‘Prepare supper for me; put on your apron and serve me while I eat and drink; later you may eat and drink’? 9 Do you thank the slave for doing what was commanded? 10 So you also, when you have done all that you were ordered to do, say, ‘We are worthless slaves; we have done only what we ought to have done!’ ”

Psalm 91: 1-6, 14-16

Assurance of God’s Protection
1 You who live in the shelter of the Most High,
    who abide in the shadow of the Almighty,
2 will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress;
    my God, in whom I trust.”
3 For he will deliver you from the snare of the hunter
    and from the deadly pestilence;
4 he will cover you with his pinions,
    and under his wings you will find refuge;
    his faithfulness is a shield and defense.
5 You will not fear the terror of the night
    or the arrow that flies by day
6 or the pestilence that stalks in darkness
    or the destruction that wastes at noonday.

14 Those who love me, I will deliver;
    I will protect those who know my name.
15 When they call to me, I will answer them;
    I will be with them in trouble;
    I will rescue them and honor them.
16 With long life I will satisfy them
    and show them my salvation.

Make This Church a Welcome and Safe Place - Together!

by Joey Capuano

I am going to start today by lifting up a very important calling from the Discipleship Ministries leaders for this week:
Worship is a moment in and of itself, but it connects to and feeds other moments in our lives and faith. This week – indeed, every week – focus on those connected moments.

In moments like our current time, with more and more acts of senseless, hateful violence, and especially in light of the shooting and arson at a church in Grand Blind Township, Michigan, a church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Chapel, we need to become more connected as a human and Christian family. Yes, when these acts happen, they are deeply saddening. I will admit that I am feeling scared and just sad many times, especially since it seems like every time the news comes on, there is another report about another terrible event. But, we NEED to remember that we have to lean on our Father through these times, and at all times.

And, as the Discipleship Ministries leaders remind us with the above quote, we need to ask God to help us connect together as a way to overcome! Sunday Worship provides us a time to do this each week, but we need to use the Inspiration freely given by God in church to bring this feeling of connection, safety, and love into the world to everyone that we meet.

Remember our scripture from Psalm 91 last week, which was the inspiration for Pastor Mary’s wonderful sermon this past Sunday? All about the safety that only one being can provide: God. We can take solace in that blessing of truth. We have to focus on the connection and closeness that that feeling provides us and bring that into the world!

Lamentations 1 talks about how a city that was once full of people can become empty. (Verse 1: How lonely sits the city that once was full of people!) This can happen at any place, however. If we let fear win, if we give up hope, this can even sadly happen in our churches. But, if we pray and trust in God, we can prevent this. We can do even more - we can truly make this church, and our whole Earth, a WELCOME and LOVING place! What better calling and action to take with World Communion Sunday coming up this Sunday?

Please continue to bless, guide, inspire, and love us God, Amen,
Joey
