Psalm 91: 1-6, 14-16

1 You who live in the shelter of the Most High,
    who abide in the shadow of the Almighty,
2 will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress;
    my God, in whom I trust.”
3 For he will deliver you from the snare of the hunter
    and from the deadly pestilence;
4 he will cover you with his pinions,
    and under his wings you will find refuge;
    his faithfulness is a shield and defense.
5 You will not fear the terror of the night
    or the arrow that flies by day
6 or the pestilence that stalks in darkness
    or the destruction that wastes at noonday.

14 Those who love me, I will deliver;
    I will protect those who know my name.
15 When they call to me, I will answer them;
    I will be with them in trouble;
    I will rescue them and honor them.
16 With long life I will satisfy them
    and show them my salvation.

God, My Refuge

by Joey Capuano

This upcoming Sunday’s Psalm is so inspirational and just what we need right now. It’s a God-wink! I hope it provides you comfort as it did me!

Shelter is a necessity for all living things. Especially in hard weather, that physical structure protects us. This is why - as Christians - we are called to help our family members in Christ that are struggling with housing insecurity.

But this Psalm points to something that is even more important than physical shelter. It is refers to our spiritual shelter. We know that God provides us with this shelter, as Father in Heaven, Jesus among us in the faces of everyone we meet, and as Holy Spirit residing in our hearts. If we remember this fact and accept it in our hearts, everything else - our physical and emotional needs - will be fulfilled by Him.

This is especially important for us to remember with things that are going on right now. As the Discipleship Ministries reflection last week talked about, we don’t go to worship to escape the problems of the world, but rather to be restored in strength from God. This Psalm shows us again that we are carried by God through everything in this world, in church and out!

But, another word sticks out here. That word is Trust. We have to trust God. God sends many signs, especially through human and other helpers to help us through our journey; we just have to acknowledge and accept that help, and trust that these blessings are from our Lord as an answer to all of our prayers!

May God bless us and remind us of His always - present Love,
Joey
