Psalm 139: 1-6, 13-18

1 O Lord, you have searched me and known me.
2 You know when I sit down and when I rise up;
    you discern my thoughts from far away.
3 You search out my path and my lying down
    and are acquainted with all my ways.
4 Even before a word is on my tongue,
    O Lord, you know it completely.
5 You hem me in, behind and before,
    and lay your hand upon me.
6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me;
    it is so high that I cannot attain it.

13 For it was you who formed my inward parts;
    you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
14 I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.
    Wonderful are your works;
that I know very well.
15     My frame was not hidden from you,
when I was being made in secret,
    intricately woven in the depths of the earth.
16 Your eyes beheld my unformed substance.
In your book were written
    all the days that were formed for me,
    when none of them as yet existed.
17 How weighty to me are your thoughts, O God!
    How vast is the sum of them!
18 I try to count them—they are more than the sand;
    I come to the end—I am still with you.

O God, You Search Me and You Know Me

by Joey Capuano

Growing up, my family and I went to Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Harrisonburg, and one of the most calming Hymns that I remember singing was Bernadette Farrell’s musical rendition of Psalm 139. The Scripture and the music combined to really make you feel the Word. God speaks to us in so many ways. Music is one of His mediums!

I invite you to listen to this version of the Hymn, sung by the Notre Dame Folk Choir. Active listening is a mindfulness technique that really calms you down. Instead of just hearing the music and words, we can really contemplate them.  This is a great way to hear and feel God speaking to us! It’s beautiful! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3JPGY1w-674

The Scripture here is very powerful and comforting. Who truly knows us the best and most fully? God! Why? He has known us since the beginning - before us, forming and molding us in our mothers’ wombs, knows our souls as we live on Earth, and will know us for eternity. To me, this provides me with such comfort because God - as the whole world’s Potter, Shepherd, and Father - is with us. This reminds me of another verse that I have heard a lot lately, Romans 8:31. I love the NRSV version of this verse, because it makes us feel united as a Christian family: “If God is for us, who is against us?” Could anybody provide such comfort for us other than Him, the One who formed us in our mothers’ wombs? We know the answer!

In today’s many - times intense society, a moment from the Living Word of God can provide us comfort! It can also encourage us to share God’s Word, Truth, and Love with others! I pray that in this week and going forward, we can always be reminded of this goodness!
